Similar to the way the green and maroon berets of British Commandos and Paratroopers in WW2 have been adopted by Western militaries. It is a mark of both respect for your predecessors and of your aspiration to be like them. The Imperial Navy adopted the striped undershirt as par of its uniform in the 19th Century. It was worn by Russian and Soviet Naval Infantry units, both regular and ad hoc, which fought with distinction in the Russo-Japanese War, World War One, the Russian Civil War (on both sides), the Second World War and today serve in the Syrian Conflict. When the Soviet Airborne Forces (VDV) were re-organised after WW2, their new commander Vasily Margelov was a veteran of the WW2 Naval Infantry. He continued to wear the Telynashka and in the early 1970s the VDV were granted the right to wear the Telynashka, in recognition of the elite status they had achieved under his command. After the fall of the Soviet Union both the Naval Infantry and VDV were split, with elements going into the armed forces of several successor states. These new units continued to wear the Telynashka.

They are distinguished by the colour of their stripes: So unless you are the kind of fool who mocks marines, paratroopers, SWAT or firefighters do not disrespect anybody wearing a Telynashka. That way you will retain your dignity, and maybe your teeth. Russia had a full-blown empire by the time of the Revolution. It was pretty much all land-based, though, so perhaps that’s why it doesn’t look “colonial” in the way that the British, French, or other empires did. That said, places like central Asia (the “stans” of today) and even the Caucasus were colonised in much the same way as Kenya or Fiji were. Additionally, the Duchy of Courland (today part of Latvia) had a relatively brief colonial presence on the island of Tobago – of all places, I hear you say. There’s still a Courland Bay on that island, marking the link.
