I expect most Americans would have reason to refer to them at some point, even if they don’t wear T-shirts themselves. If you wear modern slim-cut dress shirts then your t-shirt should fit you snugly. That’s what I wear and I like to wear t-shirts made from a “modal” type fabric. Modal fabric is a hybrid natural/synthetic fiber that’s very light, comfortable and stretchy. Stretch cotton is also a good choice. Here’s some examples of what I’m talking about: I usually wear a medium t-shirt but in the stretch T’s I go for a small; I want a more snug, body-hugging fit. These T’s are very comfortable even if they fit your torso like a second skin ..which is why I like to wear them. And, with this type of t-shirt and fit, there is very little bulk or lumpy bunched fabric under the dress shirt. The dress shirt fits better and looks better and stays that way. If you wear a more generous cut dress shirt then you can wear a slightly looser fit t-shirt. But I would still go with the snug fit stretch T’s because I think in the long run, even with a looser fit dress shirt, it will look better without any additional bulk from a too bulky/loose t-shirt.
